The Battle Of Evermore by Led Zeppelin

In this week's show I play a wonderful track from one of my favorite rock bands Led Zeppelin. The track is the evocative Battle of Evermore from Led Zeppelin's 1971 album Led Zeppelin IV.

The story of this song is sort of typical of the band at the time, they were prolific, artistic, experimental and confident. The story goes that Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wrote the song together in one impromptu sitting.

They were in Headly Grand when Page picked up a mandolin owned by fellow band member John Paul Jones. He had never played a mandolin before but started to form some ideas which Plant began to join in with. The songs theme was based on the Lord Of The Rings which I guess Plant was reading at the time.

When it got to the stage of recording, Plant decided that it would be nice for another voice would be a great idea and promptly asked Fairport Convention singer Sandy Denny to be that second voice. The track and one like it make Led Zeppelin the band they are. I love this album, it was one of the first Led Zeppelin Albums I owned and it's still fresh and amazing to listen to almost 50 years after it's creation.

Obscure But Not Forgotten - Badger

I also feature the track Wheel of Fortune from the 1973 album One Live Badger from the short lived but wonderful Badger. One Live Badger was the band's first vinyl  release. It was unusually a live live album. One Live Badger was co-produced by Jon Anderson, the vocalist with Yes and Geoffrey Haslam, and was taken from a show opening for Yes at London's Rainbow Theatre. The band was co-founded by keyboardist Tony Kaye after he left Yes, with bassist and vocalist David Foster

The cover art was done by Roger Dean, the artist responsible for many of Yes's album covers, although Kaye left Yes before their partnership with Roger Dean.
